EditBringing digital biology to life
Our mission is to empower our users by providing a state-of-the-art, affordable and easy-to-use IT environment.
Research in molecular life science is becoming data-intensive. As new technologies enable EMBL’s scientists to acquire more – and more complex – data, the IT Services team deploys innovative approaches to help them store, analyse and make sense of that wealth of information.

EditAt EMBL Heidelberg, the IT infrastructure is designed to support data-driven science involving key technologies such as genome sequencing, large-scale imaging, computational biology and modelling.
The EMBL 3D Cloud is a flexible, scalable virtualisation infrastructure that enables users to process microscopy data without having to move large datasets multiple times.
Discover how EMBL scientists are using GPU computing to push biology forward and how IT Services are supporting these activities.
IT teams across EMBL have been focussing on reducing their energy consumption with impressive results, supporting our budgets and sustainability.
Alba Diz-Muñoz – Group Leader, Cell Biology and Biophysics Unit
“What I find very special about the IT department here is that you can come to them with a problem and they’ll solve it very quickly. The efficiency of the team is really remarkable.”
Jaime Huerta – Research Scientist, Bork Group
“I’m very happy with the new system they’re setting up, which is the state-of-the-art in high-performance computing.”
Want to push the boundaries of current technology? Interested in joining an international team that values your own development as much as the infrastructure’s?
