This inaugural EMBO | EMBL Symposium aims to showcase the future of plant biology. Going beyond the limited number of model plants that plant biologists have historically focused on (e.g. Arabidopsis, corn, rice), it is nowadays possible to use comparative approaches to uncover the mechanistic basis and the evolutionary drive for the enormous phenotypic variation among the 400,000 species of plants on Earth.
Europe has a large and thriving community of plant biologists, with particular expertise in plant diversity at the genomic, genetic and metabolic levels. This conference will bring together experts from four major topical threads, namely plant genomics, metabolism, genetic engineering, and evolution, all of which are strongly represented across Europe.

EMBO | EMBL Symposia promote scientific communication and collaboration in the European research area. They provide scientists with a platform to discuss and exchange ideas on forward-looking topics and new developments in the life sciences.
Topics emphasise upcoming developments and the interdisciplinary nature of related fields. Jointly funded and organised by EMBO and EMBL – and complementary to their respective courses, workshops, and conference programmes – the symposia promote scientific communication and collaboration.
All symposia are held in the EMBL Advanced Training Centre (ATC) in Heidelberg, Germany, or virtually.
